I am confused and disappointed by the government of my country. The opening ceremonies of the Olympics in my city of Vancouver expressed the persistence of First Nations culture and values. There is a youth conference nearby in Squamish for native youth to focus their attention and encourage them about the value of sport and education in their lives. At the same time and despite the efforts and money spent on these two high profile events, the government declares it will eliminate funding to a key educational facility for First Nations in Canada. I am certainly unimpressed with the ironic disappointment I feel, yet again, as a Canadian.

I sent the video and information to four friends and I sent emails with commentary to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs.
My letter’s in the mail to Tom Lukiwski, the video is on my blog, and I’ve made it clear there’s only one acceptable future for the First Nations University of Canada: a long-term one.
[...] only yesterday, when a FNUC professor and acquaintance of mine sent me an email with a link to this blog, explaining reasons the university should remain open (despite financial mismanagement problems) [...]
Tansi,
I have long been a supporter and former student of FNUC. I am mostly deaf and if the school had not been there I would never have graduated University. As a First Nations member of Onion Lake, I know first hand the reward of going to FNUC as a student and reaching my goals. My hope is that in the future I will be able to finish my Journalism degree at FNUC.

I am not Aboriginal but regardless, this news is absurd! I honestly hope that this does not happen because it is completely BACKWARDS! My letter is in the mail and my support will always be there. I hope others will join because they are simply disgusted with this government and their preposterous ideas.
I posted the video and sent it away to friends “walls” . You always have my support!! Education and its access it is the key element in life , to success .I am emailing my letters tonight .Video “four friends” is great and inspirational.
I saw the video and I am saddened by the news. I wasn’t aware such a school existed. A great way to keep aboriginal culture and heritage alive. But I am curious to know…does the dean of this university appear in the video? If not, then why? As the school’s representative, he/she should of been the first person introduced in the video to state the facts. Regardless, I hope this issue gets resolved ASAP so the education process can continue.
Peace

June 2/10 CBC Radio interviewed Cadmus Delorme Student VP for FNUniv. The students’ 77 day live-in stirred my heart. THIS is where chance happens; when each one of us does something important and inconvenient because we believe.
Internet searches unearthed little on the 77 day live-in. ‘The Vancouver Sun’, ‘The Province’ and the ‘The Globe and Mail’ carried articles on gov’t funding but little to nothing on student action. So far, I’ve found nothing in my local papers. Why?
Calling government and the press to accountability is important but the students of FNUniv show us something extraordinary – WE are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change makers. Just like “Pay It Forward” the FNUniv students urge us to tell 4 friends who will tell 4 friends… Yes!!
Korten’s book “From Empire to Earth Community” shines hope. Shaking off the shackles of ‘Empire’ we step out of ‘moral autism’ and into our birthright – ‘Earth Community’. There we can perceive a new imperative and respond to its call.
The FNUniv letter and video is going to everyone I know and to the local press and to our paid civil servants (aka gov’t).
International ‘news’ and international fund raising, keep our attention turned from the local concerns that really matter, that connect us as a community and which we can authentically support for positive change. To the valiant students of FNUniv – thank you for your example and for helping me find my voice!
